School of Fashion Design

Many universities offer fashion design degrees which span across 3 to 4 years. For some people however, full-time study for this amount of time is simply impossible - given existing life commitments.

If you live in the Boston area, don't be put off by the lengthy duration of most courses. One solution may be the School of Fashion Design.

Shorter Courses through the School of Fashion Design

90% of the courses offered through the School of Fashion Design are short courses. This means that it takes one year or less for our student to sit all of the relevant papers in order to pass.

Take a look at the following papers which you might be compelled to sit - if you are looking at studying in that particular area:

  • Clothing construction.
  • History of costume.
  • Fashion sketching.
  • Textile workshop.
  • Patternmaking.

Each of these courses revolves around a central theme (which is the topic above) whilst still providing a base of knowledge covering essential fashion design and fashion industry concepts.

One thing worth noting when it comes to the construction of courses at the School of Fashion Design is that many certificates are only available in a single semester (i.e. they are not available in all three semesters).

Specific examples include the course for Colour and 2-D design. This certificate is only run in semester two each year, so keep this in mind when applying for such a subject.

Lower Costs and Requirements for Entry

The School of Fashion Design arguably has the lowest tuition costs for full-time students. In general, an individual course will cost $1080 for part-time study, and $10,800 for full-time study (10 courses in a single year).

As you can see, part-time study is an option if you have existing commitments such as family, employment, and so on.

Prerequisite Requirements to Gain Entry

This university has a somewhat open criterion for admission. However, students are expected to have completed high school, and should be able to easily get three letters of reference to support their application. Additionally, a personal interview or portfolio review will be required if your application passes the first stage.

The above criteria apply to full-time study only. Part-time study has no prerequisite requirements to gain entry.

Additionally, bear in mind that a small application fee of $50 or $25 may be charged if your application is successful. This is on top of tuition fees per year, and is a one-off cost.
