Fashion Related Programs at School of Art Institute of Chicago

The School of Art Institute of Chicago sponsors a number of different programs related to fashion, fashion design, and fashion merchandising. These include:

  • Bachelor of Fine Arts.
  • Bachelor of Interior Architecture.
  • Bachelor of Arts in Visual and Critical Studies.

Each of these programmes features a different set of courses which allows a student to hone in on their abilities, and encourage further development of their talents. At the end of the course (all of which usually take approximately 30 months) students are able to apply for university-based jobs, or employment opportunities listed through the University from outside organisations.

Course Contents for Fashion Degrees

It is most likely that a student would study a fashion major under the bachelor of fine arts degree. For entry into this program, no prerequisites are required - which is a huge bonus if you are returning to studies after a significant break.

However, all bachelor of fine arts degrees require certain off topic courses to be taken before the fashion-based content begins.

With this degree in particular, and with a focus on fashion in the second and third years, prerequisite courses include:

  • Core Studio Practice.
  • Research Studio.
  • Art History.
  • Natural Sciences.

One paper from each of the subject is required before progression is allowed on to the next stage of the course. Students who do not pass these core and prerequisite papers will need to re-sit them before progressing.

Furthermore, a minimum grade of "C" is required throughout the entire course to be awarded with the bachelor's certificate at the end. This provides a filter to students who are dedicated versus those who are not.
